Our first club night of the season went better than could have been expected, especially when taking into account the unexpected return of winter after only one glorious week of beautiful weather. Five straight days of rain drove the pool’s temperature down a degree or two; however, it could not keep our enthusiastic faithful away.

Riding off the great success of our trivia night and two great weeks of squad training, our first club racing night began with a grand sense of expectation and looked to provide for an eventful evening.

After a “short” introduction, jabber, and the ritual division into Green and Blue teams, the racing events were underway. With only four “adults” taking part, our elder swimmers were severely out represented by our youth squad goers. Come on guys and gals, lets not be afraid to show these youngsters how well we can go in the pool too.

So, away we went through heats of the 50 freestyle, then into backstroke, and on through breaststroke and butterfly. The excitement was high, and I was very impressed with the amount of cheering and enthusiasm being shown for fellow teammates.

With a strong showing in the backstroke events (especially the lightening quick time put in by James Horrey), the Blue team jumped out to a convincing lead; however, the Green team clawed its way back with some great breaststroke results. With only two heats of the butterfly, the Green team actually pulled to within such a close margin that, at the end of events, the score remained deadlock at 81 points each.

So, a relay event was drawn up to decide the night’s team winners. With all non-relay swimmers on the sidelines providing support, the two relay teams fought it out, and what a result it ended up being. Each respective anchor leg stood poised to take home victory, and Marcus O’Neil and Cello Georgouras peered over the 50M course that they each raced over earlier in the evening (Cello taking home the individual honours).

However, this was a relay setting; and each depended on their teammates this time (and maybe a meddling coach too). Marcus entered first with Cello being released from the blocks just far enough behind to make a certain dramatic finish. Cello gained and gained; however, the battler in Marcus would not give in. Heading toward the finish wall, it was impossible to say who would touch first. Stroke for stroke they advanced until Marcus touched first by the narrowest of margins.

It certainly was a fitting end for an exciting night of races, where multiple personal best times were turned in; and an occasional smile could be seen across a participating face, both young and “a bit older than young” alike.

Well done to all, thanks Mick, Donna, Dave, Sandy, Margie, Carl, Simon, Christine, our timekeepers, to John, the starter; and, most of all, to those who braved the chilly waters.

Lets make our November rendition one to remember. See you all Thursday, 18th November at 7pm.
