This inaugural running of the post-Cole event was
a crucial one. Newport allowed for the band of ocean swimmers, who come to the beach week in and week out, the reminder that our community is a great one. With ‘only’ 500 people to coexist with, the scenery felt quaint, and the atmosphere calm and relaxed.
The Newport Surf Club put on a great day with an interesting course. The ‘champagne glass’ they suggested wouldn’t have held much
water; and the race felt a lot more like an endurance surf carnival swim,
which I guess is what it really is.
The Rivalry was reunited with Banksy and Earlsy landing on the same shores
once again. With a few week break in New Zealand, David came strolling in hoping for the best. However, Richard took the advantage on the day, extending the tally to 2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 controversial draw. A few local patrons and the Newport Arms listened in as the stakes were set for the next head to head duel; the Burrill Lake
Gear One Challenge. Banksy’s bold antie of 3 hours was quickly and defiantly overtrumped when Earlsy
was quoted, “I’m going 5!” Nothing is set in stone until start time on Saturday, so we shall wait and see.
Margie is still continuing to set the club’s training standard with adding at least an extra K and a half per session, while somehow finding the time to fit in Sunday ocean races, BEFORE she goes off to work. Her presence is so appreciated in the starting gate, yet so missed as she’s off to work. We love you Margie!
Great swims to everyone on a great day.
