The first swim of the season could not go without representation from our club. Being so early on and having many of our swimmers away at other commitments, our team comprised only of three; however, we kicked off the season in a strong manner.
Our newly assembled coaching staff took on the challenge of a race from Camp Cove to the Watson’s Bay Hotel. The relatively short distance of just over a kilometer posed an interesting test; how fast can we go?
Brendan Baxter, John Guthrie, and I made our way to Watto Bay (some earlier than others, thanks Deb and Greg for the entries) and looked to get the ball rolling for the open water season.
The race start turned out to be hectic as some advertising minded costume salesmen dashed in well ahead of the starting signal. Once in, we were quickly reminded of the congestion that only exists in 100 people frantically sprinting toward the first turning buoy. Brendan and I ended up sharing the journey for almost the entire course, which provided interest in some very shallow rock formations.
The home stretch along the beachfront of Watson’s Bay added some drama as Brendan and I battled to hang onto the pace. The swim ended up being quite enjoyable; and it was certainly a good kick-start to the season.
Great support was offered from the Baxter family. An interesting computer blunder had
me and Brendan called up at the awards ceremony, taking home second and third in the 16 & Under Age category. Our accolades were short lived, however, as
it's getting tougher and tougher to pass for an Under 17 these days.
Well done John-O just for overcoming your ‘hate’ of open water. Lets look for that return trip to Watto Bay in March.
